Reflecting 2019; and putting sleeves up for 2020

Life was expected to be a mess, but luckily it’s so great to see things get sorted out so beautifully in a stack, exactly in a way I wanted. 2019, was yet another year, full of learning, traveling and growing. A successful year for Open Knowledge Nepal with a proud-able impact and always grateful to play some role in Code for Nepal and Artificial Intelligence for Development (AID) growth. Looking back at the journey always bring back those Awe nostalgic moment, but as we grow older; the society continuously keeps us reminding that life is all about tomorrow because what we will do tomorrow will matter most.

Here goes few 2019 reflection and plan for the year 2020;

  • Decrease travel, increase productivity

2019 was the year full of travel; got an opportunity to travel so many new places of Nepal. Randomly went to Mustang for the first time and made some lifelong friends on the journey. Also got an opportunity to visit Singapore, India, and Portugal.

But in 2020, the plan is to stay at a desk and continuously keep working, because I realized that traveling makes you fresh, but at the same time, the preparation time required for traveling eats a huge portion of your productive time. So, in 2020 if you are proposing to me for the travel, please don’t do it. The chances of getting “NO” reply will be very high; until & unless you are going for the mountains or oceans. No matter what others say, but exploring and working as digital nomads don’t imply on me.

Out of many; Here go my best two travel memories.

Awesome moment spent in Lisbon, Portugal. So much of love to Joana Castro for accompanying me throughout the journey.
Mustang memories; Always grateful to Priya, Prashamsa, Saroj, Sami & Rajesh for inviting me to join the tour. The memories created are unforgettable throughout the lifetime.
  • Keep reading, increase writing

In 2019, I am pretty satisfied with my reading but looking at the list of books that I completed this year is bizarre, all of them are love fiction; in other words, I seem quite addicted with an imaginary world. So plan for 2020 is to change these habits right away, by pushing for other category books and research journals.

At the same time, the plan is to increase writing so that the confidence in the particular topic increases. This year, with the help of Sijal Pokharel (Sister turned Sathi), I was able to publish the first Op-ed, which was in my bucket list for a long time. The plan is to continue the momentum and start pushing for the newspaper and research writing.

Out of many; Here go my best two reading & writing memories.

“एक सर्को माया” by GS Poudel was the best read of 2019. Many thanks to Sagar for lending me the book for reading & Shubham review at Goodreads, which inspired me to read the book.
Summarizing the learning of the #DataLiteracy Program organized by World Bank Nepal, Sijal & I wrote an article that was published at The Rising Nepal. Thank you Sijal for being my partner in crime ❤️
  • Increase Chiya Guff, decrease Himalayan Java

Many thanks to all the Chiya companions, who accompanied me for the Chiya Guff in 2019; without you, the anxiety could have already killed me. Chiya Guff is always far better than a formal meeting, which gives you an opportunity to catch up with friends and increase bonding.

But in 2020, the plan is to decrease visiting Himalayan Java, not because they serve bad coffee (they got the best coffee and customer service), but they are fucking expensive. I did some calculations of my last year’s spending and found the big portion of earning goes to Himalayan Java which is scary.

  • Less meat, more alcohol, more run

The target of being a vegetarian never worked well (many thanks to my Newar family) and I am pretty sure that I can never be the one who can easily ignore buff & chicken Mo:Mo, but from 2020 the aim is to decrease meat consumption and junk foods while eating outside. As the addiction to alcohol increases, it seems like 2020 is gonna be full of exploring different brands of alcohol, but the promise is to be a responsible drinker.

With all this eating and drinking, the question about a health issue and stamina will definitely increase, so to tackle it morning 3 hours will be dedicated for running and some stretching; but definitely “NO” to the gym.

  • More work, more discipline

In the year 2020; the plan is to work 12 hours a day. Yes, that may sound ambiguous, but I believe is worth giving a try; also with the increased pace, the horizon of work also aims to be broadened. The plan is to go beyond openness and open data.

There is still an immense opportunity especially in South Asia, regarding data and technology. Yes, Open Data comes from the heart, but it’s the right time to explore the business possibilities through technology innovation. Increasing the work hours, to explore this opportunity in a disciplined manner.

======================================

Despite all this mess, In 2019; I was able to dedicate a huge portion of time for the family 🏠 and friends because they were right, the more we grow, we spent more time with family. This year, I attend so many family gatherings and parties; Yes, they are the best people in this world. Also many many many many thanks and love to my friend Subin Pariyar for tolerating my Nakkaleypan throughout the year, for not judging me, and for continuously inspiring me. You are the best 🤗

On the occasion of Nepali New Year 2076, we went to Pilot Baba Ashram located near Suryabinayak Ganesh Temple as part of the yearly family picnic (still half of the family members were missing).
My Lifeline to Happiness; played and danced like a kid after a long gap in our latest family picnic, where we visited Kakani.
In 2019, we also build and inaugurated one more house in Kathmandu Valley.

Some extra notable moments of 2019;

Open Data Women Fellowship program was of the best project of 2019. Kudos to these hard-working girls for giving their best throughout the program and many thanks to all our partner host organizations for giving them space and opportunities.
A mandatory group photo of batch 2015; because this was the official end of a beautiful 4 years journey at Acme Engineering College.

Writing the entire reflection is quite some challenging task because every moment carries value and love; therefore ending it here for 2019. Always thankful and looking forward to the productive 2020.

Happy New Year - Party hard.
